In the midst of the outbreak of the deadly disease Corona Virus (Covid-19). Is dying from the corona virus a shahid? First examined, was the corona virus an ath-thaun (deadly plague) or not? Just discussed whether it can be said to be martyred if the dead due to corona virus? Then the terms are called shaheed is the same as shaheed on the battlefield? The scholars disagree about the screaming of ath-tha’un and al-waba '. There are those who consider the two to be the same and some that distinguish the two.
According to Arabic language experts and health experts, al-waba '(plague) is a contagious disease in a region, can spread quickly and widely. While ath-tha'un is a plague that spreads more widely and causes death. This is the definition of ath-tha'un according to linguists and fiqh scholars. The scholars believe that the corona virus is included in the ath-thaun category.
Current scholars who think so are Shaykh 'Abdul' Aziz Alu Asy-Shaykh (mufti 'aam of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia), Shaykh' Abdul Muhsin Al-'Abbad Al-Badr (a great scholar in the city of Medina), as well as Shaykh Sulaiman Ar-Ruhaily (great scholar in the city of Medina). Especially if we look at the WHO view that the corona virus has entered a pandemic, more clearly we call it ath-thaun. If including ath-tha'un, Muslims who die of the corona virus are classified as martyrs. From Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, the Prophet sallallaahu‘ alayhi wa sallam said; "There are five martyrs, those who have died due to ath-tha'un (plague), people who have died from stomach aches, people who have drowned, people who have died from falling debris and those who have died in the way of Allah. " (Narrated by Bukhari,).
From ‘Abdullah bin Busr radhiyallahu anhu, that the Prophet sallallaahu‘ alayhi wa sallam said; "People who are killed in the way of Allah (fii sabilillah) are martyrs; people who die from ath-tha’un (plague) are shaheed; people who die of stomach ailments are martyrs; and women who die from childbirth are martyrs. " (HR. Ahmad). From Jabir bin ‘Atik radhiyallahu‘ anhu, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said’; "There are seven people who are martyred who are killed in the way of Allah zza azza wa jalla, namely the victims of ath-tha’un (plague) are martyrs; drowning (while doing safar in the context of obedience) is shaheed; those who have wounds in the stomach and then die, die are martyrs; death from stomach ailments is a shahid; fire victims are martyrs; those killed by the rubble are martyrs; and a woman who died from childbirth is a martyr. " (Narrated by Abu Daud).
Imam Nawawi rahimahullah explained that there are three kinds of shaheed: First, the shaheed who died while fighting against harbi infidels (who are entitled to fight). Second, Syahid died from childbirth. Third, Syahid died because of a disease outbreak. From the division of Imam Nawawi rahimahullah above, if someone dies because of the corona virus, then he is a martyr. The requirement for shaheed is to be patient and hope for merit from Allah. From Yahya bin Ya'mar, Ayesha radhiyallahu ‘anha reported to him that he asked the Prophet sallallaahu‘ alayhi wa sallam about ath-tha’un (a plague that spreads and kills), so he answered; "That is the law that Allah sent down to whomever Allah wills. But Allah made it a mercy to believers. A servant is not in a country that has an epidemic in it, so he stays in it, he does not go out of the country and be patient and expect the reward from Allah, he knows that not the plague is affected but by God's destiny, then he will get the reward martyrdom. " (Narrated by Bukhari).
Ibn Hajar explained that what was meant as adzab was for infidels and immoralists. While the plague is a blessing for believers. As explained in Fath Al-Bari),
Thus be patient in facing this calamity, surrender and put your trust in Allah SWT. the creator of this nature with all its contents and who governs everything. As the Word in Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 153 "O you who believe make patience and prayer be your help" Strengthen patience and multiply ask for protection from Allah SWT. by increasing prayer. God knows best.
